Although I lived in the Bronx for only about ten years, and haven't been back for almost fifty years, it was a time in my life I can never forget. The people; the neighborhoods; the movie theatres; P.S. 82; Taft H.S.: they are all indelibly embedded in my memory, to the point that they still pop up in my dreams. The Bronx in the 1950's is a long time in the past, only we who lived in that time remember what it was like; after us it will be as remote as the 1850's. I went on to art school (Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn) and to work in N.Y.C. ad agencies as an art director and creative director for another 35 years and now another 10 in in my own design business in Westchester. My sons (twins) are also artists and designers working in NY, but it all started with the encouragement of Mr. Simon Palestrant, my art teacher at Taft. He was a wonderful, jolly, understanding man, who I'm sure helped many other kids unsure of where they were going after Taft to find a useful career. Here's a toast to absent friends, and may we raise our glasses to them for many more years to come.
